A top Australian university has sparked controversy by encouraging students to use the terms “invade” and “occupy” to refer to the arrival of British settlers.
The University of New South Wales’ Indigenous Terminology Guide suggests referring to Captain James Cook as the first Englishman to map the continent’s East Coast rather than “discover” Australia.
The university has rejected accusations it is trying to rewrite history, saying it does not mandate what language is used.
