Jared Goff is expected to be the face of the Rams franchise when it returns to Los Angeles after 21 years in St Louis

Jared Goff was selected as the first pick in the NFL Draft by the new Los Angeles Rams franchise.

Goff, from California University, was chosen ahead of fellow quarterback Carson Wentz, who was immediately taken by the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Rams, who have relocated from St Louis, traded with the Tennessee Titans to secure the top pick.

Laremy Tunsil, projected first choice when Tennessee held the pick, was selected 13th by the Miami Dolphins.

Other franchises passed up the chance to select the former University of Mississippi left tackle after a video appeared on his Twitter account just minutes before the draft, appearing to show him smoking marijuana through a bong while wearing a gas mask.

The post was quickly deleted and Tunsil, who suspended his account and claimed it had been hacked, said: “I made a mistake, a huge mistake.”

The Rams gave up six picks across the top three rounds this year and in 2017 to allow them to choose 21-year-old Goff.

Wentz, from North Dakota State, could take over from incumbent starter Sam Bradford, who wants to leave after being upset by the Eagles’ trading for the Cleveland Browns’ number two pick.

The San Diego Chargers selected defensive end Joey Bosa with the third pick, and the Dallas Cowboys picked up Ohio State back Ezekiel Elliott.

The New England Patriots were without their first-round pick as a punishment for the ‘deflate-gate’ scandal.

Rounds two and three of the draft, held at Chicago’s Roosevelt University, take place on Friday, with the last four rounds on Saturday.
