The victim of a shooting at the University of California, Los Angeles, was a professor of mechanical engineering, police say.
William Klug, 39, was killed in the university’s engineering building.
LA police said the gunman, who has not been named, then shot himself. A gun was found at the scene.
The campus remained under lockdown for hours on Wednesday as a massive police operation took place. The motive for the attack is unknown.
Officers found what could be a suicide note, LA police chief Charlie Beck said.
Colleagues of Prof Klug’s said he was a married father of two and described him as a kind, gentle person.
The Los Angeles Times reported that he was trying to develop a computer-generated virtual heart.
