Pro boxers can fight at 2016 Olympics

Tyson Fury will take on Wladimir Klitschko in a rematch for the WBA and WBO heavyweight titles in July

World champion Tyson Fury and all other professional boxers will be allowed to fight at the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

The sport’s governing body said 84 of 88 member federations had approved the rule change just weeks before the Games get under way on 5 August.

The vote allows any professional to enter qualifying next month in an attempt to win selection.

The move has been criticised because of the possible risks of pro fighters meeting less experienced amateurs.

AIBA, which governs boxing, says 26 entry places can be earned at the qualifying event in Venezuela.

Former world heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, who fights Briton Fury again on 9 July, has indicated he would like to box at the Olympics.

The Ukrainian, 40, won super-heavyweight gold at the Atlanta Games in 1996.
