Kabul explosion: Huge blast rocks Afghan capital

Map of Afghanistan showing Kabul

A huge explosion has rocked the Afghan capital, Kabul.

Witnesses said the blast struck at about 01:25 local time (20:55 GMT Sunday) and was heard across most of the city.

Reports on social media indicated that the electricity in parts of Kabul briefly cut off shortly before the explosion.

The cause of the explosion is not yet clear, but reports indicate it may have happened in a gas storage facility.

Afghanistan"s Tolo news organisation said the explosion happened in the Pul-e-Chakri area to the west of the city.

Last week, two suicide bombers linked to the so-called Islamic State (IS) killed 80 people and wounded 230 more in Kabul.
