The party congress will be the first since Kim Jong-un took control of the country
North Korea says its ruling Workers Party will next month hold its first congress in nearly 40 years.
The gathering, which will take place in Pyongyang, will be only the seventh in the party’s history and the first under the current leader, Kim Jong-un.
Analysts say it will be closely watched by outsiders for major policy shifts or movement among senior officials.
A statement carried by the North’s official KCNA new agency said the congress will begin on 6 May.
The statement did not specify how long it would last. The 1980 congress lasted four days.
North Korea has provoked international condemnation in recent months by carrying out several controversial nuclear and missile tests.
The latest allegedly took place last week, with the North claiming to have used “cold launch” technology to fire a missile from a submarine.
In January it conducted its fourth nuclear test with a hydrogen bomb, sparking outrage.
Analysts believe that the North may be gearing up for a fifth nuclear test as a show of strength.
